During your time as a student, there are a variety of ways you can gain experience and prepare to enter the job market. An internship is a great way to gain experience while you’re still in school, as well as network with peers and potential employers. 

Getting an internship is becoming more competitive, so it is essential to start your search early and get support from your network. By starting to explore your interests and options early in college, you allow yourself more time to find employers and opportunities that are aligned with your future goals. Appenditionally, the skills, professional network, and workplace exposure gained from internships can help you stand out in a saturated job market. 

How to Find Internships as a Freshman or Sophomore

Internships are great for helping college students decide what major they want to study and assess what careers they’re interested in. Some companies offer exploratory programs and externships that are developed specifically for first-year students, which may fast-track your application for their sophomore internship programs.

How to Find Opportunities as an Upcoming or Recent Grad

Ready to launch your career? It’s ideal to start preparing to enter the job market before you actually graduate. The transition from college student to working professional requires a lot of adjustments, and also navigating the job search takes time… and grit. 

If you are still figuring out what kind of career is right for you, consider a rotational program for that first job out of college. Some companies offer rotational programs that allow new hires to rotate between company departments, quickly gaining a variety of experiences and skills. This is a great way to get a feel for different areas of business.

Networking is a highly effective way to find opportunities. Reach out to professionals who work in the jobs that interest you to gain insights on what it takes to be successful. Also, talk with peers and alumni who work in the companies you are interested in. LinkedIn is a great platform for networking. Follow company pages on LinkedIn for notifications when your target companies post announcements and opportunities.
